SHELTON, Washington (SmallTownPapers) -- Mary Catherine Benson, 93, a 34-year resident of Shelton, died on Oct. 5, 2012, at Mason General Hospital.

She was born on Feb. 23, 1919, to Peter C. and Catherine (Burda) Burda in Oakdale, Pa.

She graduated from Oakdale High School in 1937 and attended South Side Hospital School of Nursing in Pitts burgh. Mary enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1944, where she worked as a nurse during World War II

She married Bradley J. Benson on Dec. 9, 1950, in Vallejo, Calif.

She and her husband lived in California until they retired and moved to Shelton.

Mary's hobbies included gardening, dog breeding and training, traveling, baking and getting together with and entertaining friends.

She was active at St. Edward's Catholic Church, where she served on the Alter Society and as an ACCD teacher.

She is survived by nieces Andrea Roskov (Bernin) of Pittsburgh, Diane Baldinger of Pittsburgh and Jane Frahm (Bob) of Bennington, Neb.; great-nieces Lisa Lamolinare (Dave) of Pittsburgh, Kristen Roskov of Pittsburgh and Amy Mildward (Kip) of Blaire, Neb.; great-nephew Andy Frahm of Bennington, Neb.; great-great-nieces Sienna

Lamolinare of Pittsburgh and Madyson Mildward of Blaire, Neb.

She was preceded in death by her parents Peter and Catherine Burda; husband Bradley Benson; sisters Estelle Ekiert and Julia Suba, and nephews Mark Baldinger and Kenneth Baldinger.

A funeral mass will take place at 11 a.m. on Thursday at St. Edward's Catholic Church.

Burial with military honors will take place at Shelton Memorial Park after the service.

Arrangements are by McComb Funeral Home of Shelton.
