ROLLA, North Dakota (SmallTownPapers) -- Roger Sutton, age 69, of Belcourt. North Dakota, passed away on Friday, August 28, 2009, in his home.
Roger Orville Sutton was born at home on the Sutton farm on November 22, 1939, to Orville and Mildred (Coons) Sutton.
Roger was the oldest of six children and the only son. He grew up on the farm and attended school near the farm up to the eighth grade continuing his schooling in Rolla.
Roger served in the United States Army from November 16, 1961, thru November 15, 1967. Roger returned home and for a while helped on the family farm.
Roger started working in the 1960s at Westside in Rolla.
Roger married Rose Martell on June 26, 1978, and established their home next to Belcourt Lake. He later returned to help his Dad with the Sutton Excavating business. In 2000, Roger started working at the Cenex in Rolla until his retirement in 2007. Upon retiring,
Roger spent his time working around the homestead and come harvest time helped out at the Ray Hudson farm near Rolla.
Roger was well known for his experienced handyman skills of fixing and repairing farm equipment, lawn equipment, vehicles, and just about any type of repair work. He was very much in demand with farmers, friends and family around the area to help fix their equipment problems.
Roger is survived by his daughter, Irene Martell of Bismarck; grandson, Travis (Kayla) McCloud of Bismarck; great-granddaughters, Aubrey Kay and Karli Rose McCloud of Bismarck: sisters, Eileen Bader of Minot, Joyce Hogenson of Wenatchee, Washington, Janet Danielson and Janice Simon of East Wenatchee, Washington, and Gail Herber of Cashmere, Washington; father-in-law, George Martell Sr.: brothers-in-law, Clifford Martell, Patrick (Ruth) Martell, Robert (Barb) Martell, George Martell Jr., Raymond (Elma)Martell. Frank and Gilbert Martell, all of Belcourt; sisters-in-law, Theresa Patnaude, Betty (Richard) Marcellais, Carol (Raymond) Belgarde, Stella (Gary) Renault, and Sandra Martell, all of Belcourt; and many nieces and nephews.
Roger was preceded in death by his wife, Rose (Martell) Sutton; parents, Orville and Mildred (Coons) Sutton; mother-in-law, Mary (Pays) Martell; brother-in-law, William Martell; niece, Sharleen Martell; and nephew. David Martell.
Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Friday, September 4, 2009, at St. Ann's Catholic Church, Belcourt, with Fr. Shane McKee S.O.L.T. presiding. Burial was in St. Ann's Catholic Cemetery, Belcourt.
Casket bearers were Travis McCloud, Jim Foussard, Richard Griffin, Chet Martell, Jerrod Belgarde and Richard Martell.
Honorary bearers were Pat Bercier, Mike Feyerisen, Tom Haggar, Tim McCloud Sr. and Ray Hudson.
Readers were Curtis Patnaude and Richard Marcellais. Gifts were brought forward by Ronnie and Lisa Belgarde.
Special music was provided by Chad Marcellais. Eulogy was given by Pat Bercier.
Military Honors were provided by the Lilley Dionne American Legion Post #262 of Belcourt.
Arrangements were with Elick Funeral Home, Rolla.
